Procedural Sedation in GI Endoscopy
Comprehensive bilingual curriculum on procedural sedation for GI endoscopy nurses. Covers the spectrum from minimal sedation to general anaesthesia, the major sedative and analgesic agents (midazolam, fentanyl, meperidine, propofol, ketamine, dexmedetomidine), pre-sedation assessment (ASA classification, Mallampati, STOP-BANG), intra-procedure monitoring (capnography, pulse oximetry, BP, ECG), recognition and management of complications (hypoxia, hypotension, paradoxical reaction, laryngospasm, aspiration), recovery scoring (Aldrete, modified PADSS), and discharge criteria. Aligned with ASGE 2018 sedation guidelines, ESGE 2021 NAAP guidelines, ASA continuum of depth of sedation, and SCFHS competency standards.

Learning Objectives
Classify the four ASA levels of sedation depth and recognise drift between levels.
Apply ASA physical status, Mallampati airway score, and STOP-BANG to risk-stratify each patient.
Describe the pharmacokinetics, dosing, onset, peak, and reversal of midazolam, fentanyl, meperidine, propofol, ketamine, and dexmedetomidine.
Set up and interpret capnography, pulse oximetry, ECG, and non-invasive BP monitoring.
Recognise and act on hypoxia, hypoventilation, hypotension, paradoxical reaction, laryngospasm, and aspiration.
Score recovery with the modified Aldrete and decide on discharge using post-anaesthesia discharge scoring (PADSS).
Document sedation events accurately for the SGA registry and SCFHS audit requirements.
